INJURY BLOW FOR BEAULY

Beauly's chances of consolidating their position in North Division 1 have suffered a blow  with losing their experienced half back Innes Simpson for six weeks.Innes sustained a broken ankle in todays game v Oban Celtic. We wish Innes all the best as he begins his recuperation & look forward to his return in a green shirt.

BEAULY WELCOME OBAN CELTIC

Beauly welcome Oban Celtic to Braeview on Saturday in a 1st round Balliemore Cup tie.

Oban Celtic were founded in 1927 due to a plethora of players being available who could not get a game for either the senior or the junior side of Oban Camanachd. The Club were highly successful from the start, winning the Bullough Cup in their first year and reaching the Camanachd Cup Final in 1937, where they defeated Newtonmore.

The Camanachd Cup has been won five times in all and they have also been runners up on 4 other occasions. They were also South Senior Champions 12 times before reconstruction.

The Club has fallen on hard times in the new millennium, being relegated from the old National Division One to South Division One in 2004 and then being consigned to South Division Two due to a poor league position at the time of league reconstruction. This led to the best players going to fierce local rivals Oban Camanachd, and also the loss of the reserve team. The club finished second in South Division Two in 2007 but won the league at a canter in 2008, marking success after several years of decline. The last meeting between Beauly & Oban Celtic was in a 2nd round Sutherland Cup tie in June 2006 which resulted in a 1-0 win for Beauly.

MATCH REPORT BEAULY V KILMALLIE NORTH DIVISION 2

A new era dawned on Saturday 13th March when Beauly 2nd team fulfilled their opening fixture after promotion to North Division 2 where Kilmallie were the visitors to Braeview Park.

The team under the leadership of new captain Rory Campbell & management were eager to get playing after their opening fixture away to Skye was understandably postponed following the passing of DR Macdonald.

A period of dry weather saw that the pitch conditions had improved considerably from last week but a cold prevailing wind made for chilly conditions for the sizable (by 2nd team standards) crowd that had come along to watch.

Beauly had assembled an experienced squad for this game & were delighted to welcome back Ian Cattanach after missing all last season to go traveling.

Indeed it was Ian (who started at full forward )who was involved in the first notable action of the match as he shot over the bar with only 1 minute on the clock.

Kilmallie responded to this almost immediately when in their first attack wing  forward Mark Graham shot high into

The home team didn’t let their heads drop after this setback & began to apply more pressure on the Kilmallie goal. Firstly Scott Maclean brought out a fine save from the visitors keeper after being set up by Scott Macleod, then their pressure was rewarded when Simon Holmes shot in at waist height from the edge of the circle on 13 minutes to equalize.
Beauly continued to enjoy most of the play with the new look forward line performing well but half time was reached with no further score.
Half time Beauly 1 Kilmallie 1.
When the second half got underway Beauly with the wind at their backs carried on where they left off at half time trying to get the breakthrough goal. New Kilmallie goalkeeper Ryan Watson was performing brilliantly making fine saves from Ian Cattanach , Simon Holmes & particularly a great effort hit on the turn from Jordan Keil.
It was 64 minutes when the home side broke the deadlock, Ian Cat cut the ball back to Jordan Keil around the penalty spot, Jordan layed it sideways to Scott Maclean who hit a low angled shot just inside the post from 20 yards out to finally give Beauly the advantage.
After going behind Kilmallie rallied somewhat & Kyle Macdonald who to this point hadn’t had much to do had to make two smart saves within quick succession. They couldn’t keep this momentum going & as the game approached its final minutes Beauly were again on top. Simon Holmes had a great chance on 85minutes to secure the points but was unable to convert when a goal looked inevitable.
Scott Maclean ensured the two points for Beauly when he scored with a similar effort to his earlier goal on 89 minutes.
Final Score Beauly 3 Kilmallie 1
It was a great all round team performance from Beauly with everyone playing their part however special mention must go to Jordan Keil who had probably his best to date for Beauly.
Squad :-Kyle Macdonald, Martin MacLean, Alan Bruce, Rory Campbell(captain), Neil Rose, David Groat, Martin Macfadyen, Scott Macleod, Simon Holmes, Scott Maclean, Jordan Keil, Ian Cattanach, Robbie Tuach, Andrew Fraser, Callum Morrison

March 6th 2010  - Match Report Beauly v Kinlochsiel

North Division One – Beauly 2 – Kinlochshiel 0
Scorers Jack MacDonald (21 mins) and Barrie MacDonald (89 mins – penalty)

The first match of the new season was preceded by a minute’s silence in memory of club stalwarts Hamish MacColl and Kenny Ross who had died during the close season. Our thoughts were also with the MacDonald family from Skye who were mourning the death of D R MacDonald who had passed away on the morning of the match. The reserve team’s match at Portree was cancelled to honour his memory.

Old rivals ‘Shiel with a reputation for starting the season slowly were out of the blocks first and dominated the opening exchanges. A well struck drive from Gordie MacDonald looked net bound until Marty Davidson averted the danger with a fine save.

Beauly recovered from that early shock and with Barrie MacDonald showing up well in the centreline the pressure was soon at the other end. Jack MacDonald flashed in a 20 yard drive for the opener in the 21st minute and for the rest of the half Beauly remained on top.

‘Shiel worked hard to get back into the game throughout the second half and with less than fifteen minutes remaining they forced a penalty when John MacRae was upended in the box. MacRae stepped up for the penalty but his attempt struck Davidson’s right hand post and the danger was cleared. Finlay MacRae joined the attack as ‘Shiel pushed for the winner and the ploy almost worked but he was denied by a tremendous last ditch tackle by Roger Cormack.

As ‘Shiel continued to press the Braeview faithful were fearing the worst but in the final minute Graham Kennedy the Kirkton keeper conceded a penalty after being pressurised by David Neilson. Barrie MacDonald’s confidently struck spot hit gave him not a chance and both points were on their way to Braeview.

Credit is due to both sets of players for fine match played on difficult underfoot conditions. ‘Shiel were missing fullback Paul MacRae and full centre Steven Callendar but Beauly were also denied the services of new signing Mark MacLachlan.

Beauly’s overall play was worthy of both points but undoubtedly the Kinlochshiel support will feel that a share of the points would have been a fairer outcome.

It is Lochcarron at the New Battery Park next Saturday (13th March) and another tough battle is in prospect.

Team Martin Davidson , Roger Cormack, MacKay Murray, Douglas Blain, Innes Simpson, Conor Ross, Conor Cormack, Barrie MacDonald, David Maclean, Sean Stewart (Capt) Jack MacDonald David Neilson. Subs Iain Broadhead; Ross Forbes and Jamie MacLennan.

Kenneth Ross 1929-2010
It is with deep regret that the club marks the passing of one of it’s most distinguished ever servants Kenny Ross.
Born in Fraser Street in the village Ken attended Beauly School where his development into a fine shinty player was honed. Ken with his athletic physique & clean hitting was a natural wing centre, indeed it was the only position he was to play in his long career.
The post war years saw a resurgence of shinty in Beauly.A group of young men who had come through the dark days of the war started to make a name for themselves in restoring Beauly to the fore in shinty.
Their first chance of glory came in the Sutherland Cup Final of 1947 against Kilmallie but they were soundly beaten by more experienced opponents.
Better days were round the corner though & with Ken as captain he led Beauly to the Sutherland Cup in 1952 by beating Col-Glen in Oban.
He then led the team to a cup double of the Sutherland & Strathdearn Cups in 1954.Then in 1955 they retained the Strathdearn Cup.
A recurring shoulder injury led to Ken’s retiral from playing after a 15 year career, however Ken & the teams he captained had restored Beauly’s status in shinty.Their success was to sow the seeds for a new generation of players that culminated with Beauly winning North Division 1 in 1973.
Outwith shinty Ken served in the Royal Engineers where he learned the skills that were to lead to a long career as a HGV driver. Most notably with Russells of Bathgate where he had over 30 years service. Ken retired in 1994,during retirement he liked the outdoor life and when there was no shinty to watch on a Saturday he made for the hill lochs for a spot of fishing. He also took
a keen interest in gardening and The Beauly Firth and Glens Pipe Band.
He also gave of his time during retirement as a voluntary driver for the MS Society in Inverness. Ken passed away on Monday 25th January after a brief illness that he tackled courageously & with good humor to the last. He is survived by his wife Joan, Daughter
Wendy, Son-in- Law Richard and Grandchildren Liamh, Niamh, Siobhan
.

HAMISH MACCOLL

It is with great sadness the club mourns the passing of our friend Hamish.

The club pass on its heartfelt sympathy at this sad time to his devoted parents Jean & John Allick ,his brothers John & Ewan & his daughter Caitlin of who he was so very proud.

The Maccoll family have have been great supporters of the club in many ways over the years & the club would like to show their support for them as they come to terms with their sad loss.

Many younger people in the village & shinty club will probably remember Hamish for the incredible amount of club lottery tickets he sold every week as well as the collections he took at club home games. However Hamish’s contribution to the success of Beauly Shinty Club should be recognized both off & on the shinty pitch.
Brought up at the Maccoll family homes firstly at Teandalloch then at Achbeg, he was educated at Tarradale Primary School & Dingwall Academy.

Throughout his schooldays shinty played a large part in Hamish’s life coming from a family with a great shinty tradition. Hamish with his natural strength & fierce shot made the position of full forward his own in all the Beauly Junior & juvenile team that he featured in.
The undoubted highlight of Hamish’s shinty career was in 1987 where Beauly’s formidable under 17 team of that era won all 5 competitions that they entered that season . This included the Mactavish juvenile cup & W J Cameron league. Hamish was an invaluable member of this team that achieved such remarkable success.

Things were to change for Hamish in November 1994 following a serious road accident which happened while working as an electrician for ESL in Inverness.

While he made in many ways a remarkable recovery, the long term effects that he was left with were to prove challenging for both himself & his immediate family.

Hamish’s untimely passing has hit Beauly as a club & community hard. His larger than life presence will be greatly missed around the village square where everyone knew him.
He will be particularly missed at Braeview Park where he was one of the club‘s most loyal & partisan supporters.

We are left with our memories of Hamish .Some recent & some further back in time, but either way whatever period we remember Hamish shinty played a big part in his life.

Beauly Shinty Club was proud to have him as a member ,we are all the better for knowing him & hope he has found peace.

BEAULY SHINTY CLUB AGM Thursday 10th December 2009

President David Calder welcomed a crowd of over 30 to the Phipps hall for the club’s AGM.After the opening welcomes he addressed the assembled crowd with his report for the season just finished. This began by passing comment on the successful sale of work in February where the sum of £2544 was raised .

When the action started on the pitch in March he noted that both teams did not enjoy the best of starts to the season ,mainly due to a number of injuries to key players which left both teams weakened.Things improved as the season entered April & both teams got back on track by starting to get points on the board.

With reference to the first team ,it was his thought that the 4-3 home defeat to Caberfeidh was pivotal to the teams fortunes & points in the league were hard to come by after this save for a rousing performance in the last game away to Kinlochsheil where a point was taken.

The President also noted that performance in the cup competitions for the first team were a disappointment ,in that they failed to advance past the first tie in any of the competitions they entered.

He noted that the reserve side went on a 13 game undefeated run thay culminated with them securing the North Division 3 Championship against Lochaber in their last game of the season.Overall he stated that it was a year of consolidation.

He looked forward to the season ahead for both sides, the reserve side competing in North Division 2 for the first time in 15 years. The first team with their extremely young side were on the verge of something special he predicted & he hoped this would be rewarded in the season to come .

The President then went on to thank a list of people who had assisted over the previous season.

This included Steve Maclean senior manager & other coaches ,Heather Simpson & her tearoom assistants, Iain & Fiona Morrison for their work in securing funding for pitch alterationsAlison Cairns (Club Secretary) Jock Matheson (Club Vice President) & al those who had served on the general committee.Tribute was payed to the Captains of both teams last season:- Sean Stewart & Alan Bruce.

He then went on to recognise those players rewarded at the prize giving dance in November namely.

Senior Player of the year :- Mackay Murray

Players Player of the year :- Kyle Macdonald

Young Player of the year :- Martin Macfadyen

Jock Mackenzie Award :- Ewan MaColl

Youth Player of the year :-

Calum Morrison

David finished his address by mentioning the success of Beauly & Ord Junior Club who are being recognized by the Cammanachd Association for work, he praised the contribution of their coaches namely Ewan MaColl, Iain Morrison, David MacLean & Gillian Macdonald

On conclusion of the Presidents address the club accounts were presented to the meeting for scrutiny. This was done by the President as the club treasurer Karen Anderson was unable to be present. These were generally favorable, there was however concern expressed about the reduction in takings from the club lottery & discussion about how to rectify this situation.

The President stated that as per normal that the club would appoint their management teams for both first & reserve teams as a priority for the incoming committee at their first meeting in January 11th 2010.The President then vacated the chair to allow the election of office bearers for the new committee

The process duly followed with the following appointments being made:-

Club Chieftan:- Donnie Fraser

Club Vice Chief:- John Alick Morrison

President :- David Calder

Vice President :- Jock Mathieson

Secretary :- Alison Cairns

Treasurer :- Karen Anderson

Fixtures Secretary :-Iain Petrie

General Committee :- Cameron MacKay, Ian Campbell, Donald Maclennan,Iain Morrison,Stephen MacLean, David MacLean snr,Roger Cormack,Callum Duff,Alan Bruce, David Groat, Scott MacLean

There were two further appointments made , these being

Cammanachd Liason Officer :- Jock Mathieson

Website Editors :_ Iain Petrie, Iain Morrison.

At this point the meeting was to have been addressed by the guest speaker Donald Macnaughton the well known motivational coach. Donald had to unfortunately call off & was unable to be at the meeting. It was confirmed that the Club had secured his services for the season ahead.

With all items on the agenda covered , the meeting then opened the floor to AOCB

The Lovat Cup dance was discussed & arranged for Saturday 2nd January 2010 with an 830pm start in the RBL in Beauly.Ticket prices were set at £10 per head.It was then stated that the Club mini bus was available for use again after bodywork repairs were carried out by Graham Tolmie in Dingwall.

The President then read out a letter sent for the AGMS attention by Ivor Campbell . This refered to the slight possibility of Beauly going to Dubai to play an exhibition match against an Irish Expat hurling team in the Emirate. The meeting gave Ivor the approval to advance this if practible.

There then commenced a round of thanks ,with Iain Mackenzie thanking Treasurer Karen Anderson for all her hard work in both looking after & presenting the club finances in the year just past.

John A Morrison then thanked & congratulated David Calder for all his hard work in presiding over the past period, he noted that the club has never been so well run.

The President then thanked everyone for attending & the meeting closed.

BEAULYS TRAINING FOR LOVAT CUP HAS COMMENCED

Beauly have begun their preperation for this seasons Lovat Cup to be played at Balgate,Kiltality on Saturday 2nd January 2010 At 1pm  against Lovat.

Club manager Steve Maclean has selected a pool of 18 players who he thinks have the potential to wrest the trophy from holders Lovat who after their fine season in winning North Division 1 will start as heavy favourites.

 DIVISION 3 WINNERS 2009

BEAULY WIN MARINE HARVEST NORTH DIVISION THREE

Beauly’s North Division 3 season culminated with a trip to Spean Bridge on Saturday to play Lochaber.
The team traveled down the A82 in a quiet subdued bus that probably masked a fair share of nerves , knowing what was at stake.
A win or draw in this fixture would bring the League title to Brae view , but defeat would mean that Lochbroom would be champions.
The club had a strong squad available for the game with the notable exception of Terry Macallister who was suspended also Scott MacLean & Ian Macfarlane who were away on holidays.
The crucial nature of the encounter meant that the club management opted for experience resulting in young stars of the future missing out on selection such as Callum Forbes, Callum Morrison & Andrew Fraser.
With the conditions dry but windy , Beauly opted to start with the wind at their backs. They were quickly on the offensive & the first chance fell to Jack Macdonald who shot wide. This started a period of dominance from the visitors & while all the forwards had attempts on goal none hit the target .The large traveling support that Beauly enjoyed were starting to wonder where a goal would come from when Conor Ross shot high into the net from 15 Yards to put Beauly into the lead after 25 minutes.
It was hoped that this would start a goal rush for the greens but the talented home side had other ideas and following a quick counter attack from Lochaber , Beauly keeper Kyle Macdonald found himself having to make a save at his post from which Lochaber forward Patrick Toal poked the ball in from close range on 29minutes to level the score & raise the hopes of a watching Lochbroom contingent.
Beauly regrouped following this disappointment & regained the lead on 34 minutes when Danny Marshall shot low into the Lochaber net. Despite further Beauly pressure there was no further score in this half. Half time score Lochaber 1 Beauly 2.
Beauly returned to the offensive in the second half & got their reward on 54 minutes when David Maclean shot home from close range to give the visitors 2 goal lead & settled the nerves of all the watching away fans.
Goal hero Conor Ross was withdrawn after an hour with the experienced Simon Holmes taking his place.
Simon almost made an immediate impact when he was unlucky not to score following a good run & shot.
The Greens were now in almost complete control of the game & the home sides attacks were few & far between. David Maclean was unlucky not to score again when following a fine piece of skill he brought out a good save from home keeper Cameron Kennedy who was having a very good game.
The clock was ticking down , and on 80 minutes veteran full back Martin Maclean was withdrawn for Jordan Marshall, similarly Connor Cormack who had taken a knock came off for Robbie Tuach .
The game headed for it conclusion with Beauly still on top but unable to increase their advantage.
The full time whistle from referee John Angus Gillies was greeted by jubilant scenes from the visitors as they savored the moment.Final score Lochaber 1 Beauly 3
Best performances on the day were Martin Macfadyen , David Groat & Danny Marshall.
It only remained for the presentation of the cup & this honour was for team captain Allan Bruce as he received the trophy from CA communications director Donald Stewart & Marine Harvest (League sponsor) representative John Angus Gillies.
Congratulations to every one who has contributed to a successful season in North Division 3 which despite getting off to an inconsistent start where they lost 3 of their first 5 games saw them recover to win 13 games in a row to amass 30 points to pip Lochbroom by 1 point.
Team:- Kyle Macdonald,Martin Maclean,Scott Macleod,Allan Bruce( c ),Rory Campbell,Davie Groat,Connor Cormack,Martin Macfadyen, Jack Macdonald,Conor Ross,David Maclean,Danny Marshall.

BEAULY 7 - STRATHGLASS 1

Beauly went into this fixture with the strongest squad available to date this season, despite the first team squad taking on Kingussie away in a friendly fixture there still was a 17 man pool for selection. This included Jack Macdonald , Simon Holmes & Terry Macallister all of whom have been on duty with the top team.

Thier opponents today Strathglass were hit by some call offs but had a strong spine to their team with Stewart Geddes at full back ,Les Fraser at full centre & Ally Rothe & Raymond Fraser upfront.

The weather was fine at Braeview as the game got under way albeit with a strong wind blowing across the park. It wasn’t long however before Beauly showed their intent to blow Strathglass away from following a long pass from Martin Macfadyen to Allan Bruce on the right wing ,Bruce cut the ball back to find Terry Macallister who dispatched it past keeper/manager Brian Mackay after only 3 minutes.

Beauly continued to press & this was rewarded after 16 minutes when Jack Macdonald shot high into the net after receiving the ball from a Davie Groat shy.

Terry Macallister was on target again on 23 minutes when he dispatched a pass from Robbie Tuach to make it 3-0.Macallister completed his hat trick soon after when on 25 minutes he hit a low drive from 30yards that eluded MacKay. The home team continued to press & Macallister scored his fourth on 33 minutes with a drive 25yards out that flew into the roof of the net. Beauly were well on top for the remainder of the half & played some dazzling high -tempo shinty that delighted the watching crowd. With half time approaching Simon Holmes got on the score sheet with a 20yard low drive finishing off a fine passing move. Half time Beauly 6 Strathglass 0 .

Beauly introduced Scott MacLean at half time for Martin Macfadyen as they sought to increase their advantage ,this happened on 50 minutes when Jack Macdonald scored his second of the day beating Mackay from just outside the d to make it 7-0.

Credit is due to Strathglass however , as following this they dug deep & competed well for the remainder of the game. This resolve was rewarded on 60 minutes when Josh Fraser scored from close range to make the score 7-1. There was no further scoring but both keepers had good saves late on with Mackay denying David Groat & Kyle Macdonald keeping out an effort from Ali Macadam.

A good result for Beauly against good solid opposition (especially Stewart Geddes & Raymond Fraser !)

This result will give the team a further boost following the great result away to Skye last week

MacTavish Cup Quarter - final

Lovat 3 Beauly 2

RENNIE WRECKS THE DREAM

Match Report

Beauly were bidding for their fourth semi final appearance in the MacTavish Cup in seven years. The team were in good spirits after last Saturday’s excellent victory in the Camanachd Cup and there was hope that a league and cup double over the rivals was on the cards.

Matters started brightly with Barrie MacDonald testing his namesake Stuart in the Lovat goal with a low drive.Minutes later Beauly supporters were given something to cheer about when player - manager Steve MacLean drove the ball high into the Lovat net for the opening goal.Lovat responded almost immediately with a sweeping move which ended with Jimmy MacKenzie driving home from the edge of the box.

Beauly enjoyed long spells of territorial advantage but found MacDonald in excellent form.

Referee Coke MacDonald waived away loud appeals for a penalty when Barrie was upended in the box and as the half drew to a close the scoreline reflected what had been a fairly even first half.

Beauly were quick out of the blocks after the interval and pummelled the Lovat goal but were denied by a series of superb stops by the home keeper. In a rare foray into the Beauly half Lovat once again scythed through the green and white defence and this time it was Greg Matheson who applied the finish.

Lovat enjoyed their best spell after that but Beauly came charging back and David MacLean showed tremendous tenacity as he scored a fine equaliser from twenty yards.

Beauly continued to press and this time a penalty was awarded when Sean Stewart was fouled as he bore down on goal.Stewart dusted himself down but his well struck penalty produced a wonder save from Stuart MacDonald.

The game was very open now as both teams chased the winner. With less than 10 minutes remaining a long shy found Raymond Rennie unmarked at the back post and he deftly steered the ball home for the winner.

A bit harsh on Beauly but there were many positives to take from the game. The fitness of the team is good and the pool will be strengthened shortly with the imminent return  of Jamie MacLennan, Conor Ross and Innes Simpson.

Calum Duff Returns To Refereeing.

07 April 2009
Calum Duff has decided to return to shinty refereeing.
This is due a change in his work location that meant that he has reluctantly had to resign as club goalkeeping coach & assistant to Steve Maclean.
Duff hung up his whistle in July 2008 following unacceptable levels of personal abuse directed towards him at an earlier MacAulay Cup semi-final clash between Newtonmore and Fort William at the Eilan - which the home side won 5-3 - was marred by two sending offs and a glut of unsavoury incidents and resulted in an investigation by shinty's Behaviour in Sport Committee.

Duff had been appointed to referee the 2008 MacTavish Cup final and also officiated at the 2007 shinty / hurling international with Ireland .
The club would like to thank Callum for the work he has done on coaching the goalkeepers & wish him all the best on the resumption of his refereeing career

 News

Mrs Barbara Pearce.

It is safe to say that few of the younger members of the club will  recognise the name of Barbara Pearce. But Barbara who died last week at the grand old age of 97 had a strong connection with the club and the village for most of her life.

Her father , Allan, presented the Morrison Cup to the club in the fifties and later in life Barbara was very proud to present the trophy which in its heyday was the most keenly contested six - a - side piece of silverware in the sport.

A number of families have featured prominently in the history of Beauly Camanchd Club and  without doubt  the Morrison family can lay claim to a proud heritage in this respect.

Apart from Barbara’s lifelong interest in the affairs of the club her sister, Mary Bella Sellar’s  love of the club had a deep influence which is still being felt today. Her devotion to the club was the inspiration behind her son Alistair who became one of the most outstanding players in the history of the club and went on to hold just about every office including that of President.

Alistair’s son Craig also played for the club and his grandsons Danny and Jordan Marshall are both playing an active part this season.

Barbara was laid to rest in St Mary’s after a Requiem Mass on Tuesday 8th April. She had died peacefully at her daughter’s house in Norwich on March 29th.Her funeral service was very well attended  and at the end of the service  her eldest grandson, Paul Greening, delivered a moving tribute. He paid warm tribute to his grandmother and anyone lucky enough to have known Barbara would recognise the person he knew as ‘Nan” - a warm , sincere and placid person who was well liked and popular and will be remebered long after her passing.

Among the mourners were her family of five daughters and their families which included eleven grandchildren and seven great grand children.

The Club offers its condolence to her family for their loss.

It is somewhat sobering to reflect that her death marks the end of an era.It is without doubt that Barbara was the last person living who was in the village when the club last won the Camanachd Cup. She would have been one year old but it is perfectly possible that her family derived their passion for the sport from that momentous year (1913) when the club not only won Shinty’s Blue Riband Trophy but also the MacTavish Cup.

Match Report

Marine Harvest North Division One

Skye 3 Norman MacLeod (13 mins Sorley MacDonald 15 & 67 mins) - Beauly 1 Sean Stewart (32 mins)

Beauly lost their unbeaten league record after a disappointing 3 - 1 defeat by Skye.

The vibrant team spirit which characterised the opening two matches was missing and overall there can have no complaints about the result.

There were perhaps reasons for the sluggishness however.Maybe it was the long journey or perhaps it sprung from the bad luck which seems to bedevil the team at the moment what with Jamie suspended , Innes hardly 50% fit ,Conor still sidelined and Sandy having to attend casualty on Saturday morning after damaging his hand at work on Friday.Sean Stewart looked to be struggling all afternoon and it was little wonder as it transpired when an x ray after the game revealed a broken knuckle.

Due to shortages with the reserve team we travelled with just two subs  - 16 year old Iain Broadhead and Murph the player / manager.

Skye opened strongly against the wind and the Beauly goal had a couple of narrow escapes before Norman MacLeod scored in the 13th minute with a scuffed shot which caught Marty D unawares.Three minutes later Sorley MacDonald popped up unmarked to drive an unstoppable shot low and hard into the corner of the Beauly net from around the penalty spot.

The fightback was slow to arrive but inch by inch the team fought their way back into the match.Innes with his troublesome ankle heavily strapped was moved to the full forward position with Simon Holmes taking over at wing centre.

Sean Stewart brought Beauly back into the match with a sharply taken goal just after the half hour mark to open his account for the season.Gannon the Skye keeper was coming under increasing pressure and he distinguished himself with two fine saves form Barrie MacDonald and Conor Ross.

It was a different story after the interval with Skye dominating possession and putting the Beauly defence under severe pressure. They extended their lead in the 67th minute when Sorley scored from close range with the Beauly defence claiming unsuccessfully for offside.

The game , spoiled by the strong wind, petered out after that with Beauly rarely threatening to get themselves back into the match.

Next up is Inverness in the first round of the MacTavish Cup  and it is a certaintity that the Bught Park side , despite their poor start to the  season, will present a difficult obstacle.

Murph knows this but his options are becoming increasingly restricted with Sean certain to miss the game as well as Jamie.Barrie and Innes are also very doubtful so the way could be clear for a number of the youngsters from the reserve team to make their mark.

Boleskine 0 Beauly 1

Callum Forbes 60 min

Beauly reserves travelled to Smith Park Inverarnie to play Boleskine. Matches between these clubs are normally close run affairs and as it turned out this game was no different. The majority of the players in the squad featured against Lochbroom the previous week with the notable exceptions of Rory Campbell and Ken Mackenzie who were promoted to 1st team duty. Along with the experienced Cameron Mackay, this tested our available resources. Ryan Stewart who featured for the U17’s was drafted in along with Steve Tillman who due to work commitments hasn’t been available up until now. As the squad took the field, there was a determination to make up for last weeks disappointment against Lochbroom. Captain Allan Bruce won the toss and Beauly lined up, shooting towards the ‘hall’ end with a strong wind at their backs.

After their fairly even start, it became evident that Ryan Stewart was clearly at home at this level as he came out on top in several jousts against his immediate opponent Lewis Smith who is one of Boleskine’s main goal threats.

Ian Broadhead’s Performance at halfback returned to the high levels that we expect after last weeks somewhat inconsistent performance. This coupled with the stalwart ‘Toad’ Maclean and full back and 14year old Scott Macleod, looking that he has played at this level for years, meant that Beauly looked a secure outfit defensively .

With this solid foundation in place, the centre line with Neil Rose (full centre) and Martin Macfadyen and Robbie Tuach on the wings started to get the better of the Boleskine mid line and started providing the forwards with some quality service. Indeed it was the Robbie Tuach who had the first shot of note in the game with a long range effort that flew wide.

Scott Maclean at half forward then shot just wide after being set up by Allan Bruce. Bruce himself then had a go with a shot that went over.

Following this period that Beauly were on top. Boleskine rallied and the ever dangerous Lewis Smith shot into the side netting. Beauly had another let off when Kevin Hunter found himself unmarked but he shot over.

Beauly again upped their game and in the final part of the 1st half enjoyed the better of the game albeit with nothing to show for it bar a fine shot by Scott Macdonald deflected for a corner.

When half time came with the score still at 0-0 and having to face a stuffy Boleskine outfit with the wind at their backs. You would think that Beauly would be disappointed but this proved far from the case as when the 2nd half commenced, Beauly again showed their mettle by taking the game to Boleskine. With Scott Maclean swapping positions with Robbie Tuach. This effort was rewarded on the hour mark when Neil Rose fed Allan Bruce who shot low and hard from distance only for the keeper to parry, the rebound fell to 14 year old Callum Forbes who had come on as sub at ½ time for Paul Brindle and he dispatched it past the keeper for his 1st goal at this level.

Boleskine responded and for a while pressured the Beauly defence but only had a Kevin Hunter shot just wide of note.

This revival from the home team was brief and Beauly proceeded to remain in control of the game. Steve Tillman replaced Robbie Tuach up front and posted a long range shot just wide as the new look forward line still looked dangerous.

With time running out, Boleskine who had made all their allowed substitutions , moved full back Matthew Ross to full centre in a bid to get back to level terms, Matthew is a very talented shinty player who has no shortage of skill, but he was unable to make much of an impact save providing full forward Kevin Hunter with a long ball from which he shot over.

Following this, Beauly closed the remainder of the game out and it was a jubilant Beauly team that greeted referee Russell Ross’s final whistle. All in all, a hard won victory against a team that doesn’t lie down to anyone. This victory will send Beauly in good spirits to next weeks fixture away to Lochcarron.

Beauly lost 3points out of four against the west coasters last season and will hope for better on Saturday.

SQUAD Kyle Macdonald, Toad Maclean, Ryan Stewart, Scott Macleod, Ian Broadhead, Neil Rose, Martin Macfadyen, Robbie Tuach, Scott Maclean, Paul Brindle, Jack Macdonald, Allan Bruce, Callum Forbes and Steve Tillman.

Result

Beauly 1 (Barrie MacDonald 60 mins (pen) Kinlochshiel 1 Gordon MacDonald 20 mins

Rarely has a draw been so enthusiastically greeted.Four minutes of injury time had to be endured but when  Referee Campbell finally blew for full time there was joy among the Beauly ranks almost as it they had won the league.

It was maybe relief as much as joy after Beauly had played the whole second half with  eleven men and for the final ten minutes or so had they had come under the most intense pressure as ‘Shiel finally  made most of their numerical advantage.

It was certainly a performance to be proud of.The team had absorbed blow after blow.First came the dismissal of Sandy Tulloch after he was yellow carded for a second time just before the interval and then when Innes Simpson was forced out with an ankle injury in 65 minutes after playing for a long period in obvious pain. The final setback came when Jamie MacLennan, who looked to have the beating of ‘Shiel’s international defender Paul MacRae all afternoon,  came off with a recurrence of his hamstring injury.

The match itself had been a totally absorbing affair and it was what might be described as “a good old fashioned game of shinty”.Encounters between the sides are rarely anything else these days with ‘Shiel able to get the better of the Braeview Park side in recent encounters.

‘Shiel lined up on familiar lines with a strong spine starting with Paul MacRae at fullback and then the other MacRaes Finlay, John and Keith in the key positions of buckshee back , full centre and buckshee forward.

Beauly are a team in transition and team boss Stephen MacLean rung the changes from last weekend’s friendly defeat at Newtonmore with Marty Davidson restored to goals and Roger Cormack slotting in at fullback.David MacLean was given a run at full centre while Dougie Blain was shifted from wing back to wing centre. That allowed Conor Ross to be moved to the attack with the player manager dropping to the subs bench.

Honours were even in the  opening quarter and with both sides possessing plenty of pace in their forward lines, defenders had to be on their mettle from the start.”Shiel’s Gordie MacDonald was looking  sharp after missing most of last season  through injury but young Ross Forbes making a start in the  Division One side for the first time was not overawed against the former under 21 international. But in the 20th minute MacDonald showed all his class when he picked up a long ball from the centre line and skipped between two Beauly defenders before neatly steering the ball beyond Davidson.

The fear among the supporters was that the team would react poorly to this setback and for a while it looked as though ‘Shiel were going to take charge. With halftime approaching Sandy Tulloch and Steven Callender became emroiled and the upshot was a rather unfortunate booking for the Beauly player. The signifficance of the first booking became evident five minutes later when Tulloch was booked for a second time and then sent packing.

With Innes Simpson suffering from an ankle knock, manager MacLean was forced to reshuffle the team with Dougie Blain moving to buckshee and Innes moving to wing forward with Conor Ross dropping to the centre line.

The cards looked to be stacked against the team but as the old saying goes “when the going gets tough the tough get going” and as the second half got underway it was Beauly with their eleven men who began to dominate territory and possession.

With an hour gone and Beauly looking like the side with the extra player , persistance by Jamie MacLennan won a penalty when he was hauled down from behind by Paul MacRae.

Barrie MacDonald despatched the spot hit behind Kenneday in the ‘Shiel goal with aplomb.Beauly could have had more with Innes testing the keeper with a twenty five yard drive before being  eventually replaced by Simon Holmes. The pair of fresh legs added to Beauly’s momentum and in a typically mazy “Scoopy”run he almost put Beauly in front.

Beauly’s fitness levels are impressive but as the final quarter approached the extra man and the heavy ground began to take its toll.’Shiel pressed for the winner and the Beauly defence began to feel the heat.New keeper Marty Davidson had played well all afternoon and with just minutes remaining he denied ‘Shiel with a fine save.

The draw was probably a fair result but maybe it was a moral victory for the green and whites. The”new” team looks to be very promising and played very much as a unit.

Naming individuals for special praise would be a disservice to others and it is suffice to say that there were no failures from out of the fifteen man squad.

With the next game at home to Lovat there will be no resting on laurels as the lads target their first win over the old enemy in a couple of seasons.

7 March 2009 Second Team Match Report

Lochbroom 1  v Beauly 0

Beauly travelled to Ullapool to face Lochbroom for the 1st game of the north division 3 season. The squad that travelled comprised of many of the players who featured last season along with a couple of promising youngsters from the under 14 team. It was also new team captain Allan Bruce's first game in that role.

As the teams lined up for the start, the weather conditions were far from ideal but the pitch was in good condition. Lochbroom started the better of the two teams and their forwards missed a couple of good chances, including one from full forward, Cameron Macrae, who missed the target from the edge of the circle with only the keeper to beat. Beauly weathered the storm on the park and off and as the weather conditions improved, they got more into the game as the players settled down and provided good service to the forward line who linked up well to try and open up the Lochbroom defence. Several corners were forced, but goalkeeper Rory Hughes stood firm and a very even first half finished 0-0.

The second half again saw Lochbroom start the better team and Beauly goalkeeper, Kyle Macdonald had to pull off a couple of decent saves. Once again, Beauly rallied and play was from end to end. Following a double substitution on the hour mark saw Paul Brindle come on for Robbie Tuach up front and one veteran replace another with Cameron Mackay coming on for Toad Maclean.Beauly  were on top and looked the more likely to score especially through the ever dangerous Jack Macdonald. A substitution for injury was then forced upon Beauly when Paul Brindle sustained a head cut by accident following a challenge from Mark Reid. Fourteen year old Callum Forbes replaced Brindle. Things got worse for Beauly when Ken Mackenzie who was having a good game at wing centre suffered a groin injury, which required a further re-shuffle.

This gave Lochbroom the upper hand in what was up to now a very even game. The Beauly defence, marshalled by the experienced Mackay, looked to be in control of the increasing number of Lochbroom attacks as the game entered the last 10 minutes. This was to change, however, as after conceeding a corner to Lochbroom, the home team managed to find Jamie Macfadyen at the edge of the circle and he shot low past Kyle Macdonald.

Beauly tried to find an equaliser but to no avail and the game finished 1-0 to Lochbroom.

This was an even game between two good young teams and Lochbroom will continue to improve as they have every year since coming back into shinty and will take a lot of points of other teams especially at home.

Thoughts now turn to Saturdays game away to Boleskine where hopefully we will get back to winning ways.
